Vaughan Williams' Unpublished Orchestral Works
- Serenade in A minor (1898)
Four movement work for orchestra, which was praised by Stanford. Manuscript survives.
- Bucolic Suite (1900)
A four movement suite for orchestra, unperformed since 1907.
- Sentimental romance (c. 1900)
Mentioned by RVW in letters, nothing else is known about this work.
- Heroic Elegy and Triumphal Epilogue (1902)
This work was last performed in 1905, and is presumed lost.
- In the New Forest (1903)
This was intended to be a set of Four Impressions for Orchestra, but only two parts were composed : "Burley Heath" and "The Solent".
The theme from The Solent was to be reused over 50 years later in the Ninth Symphony, where it is played on the flugelhorn. The Solent theme was also used by RVW in his film music for "The England of Elizabeth"
- Symphonic Rhapsody (c. 1901-3)
First performed in 1904, the manuscript has probably been destroyed.
- Two Impressions for Orchestra (c. 1904-7)
The first impression was entitled "Harnham Down", ( andante sostenuto ), the manuscript has survived but has not been published. The second impression "Boldre Wood" was a scherzo, and has not survived.
- Norfolk Rhapsody No. 3 in G (1906)
Was to have been the finale to the "Norfolk Symphony". Last played in 1914, its manuscript has been lost.
- Fantasia on English Folk Song (1910)
This work has not survived, although the fact that it contained the tune "Seventeen Come Sunday" suggests it may have evolved into the English Folk Song Suite.
