Frames contain outer messages which contain inner messages.
All levels must be understood to extract the meaning.
Consider a modern art exhibit.</ns1:nodetext><ns1:children><ns1:child>frame</ns1:child><ns1:child>outer message</ns1:child><ns1:child>inner message</ns1:child></ns1:children></ns1:memenode><ns1:memenode><ns1:nodename>frame</ns1:nodename><ns1:nodetext>Understanding the frame message is essential to recognize it as a message.
If you do not recognise a CD is a frame, you will not realise it contains information.</ns1:nodetext></ns1:memenode><ns1:memenode><ns1:nodename>outer message</ns1:nodename><ns1:nodetext>A set of triggers (or hints) on how the message can be decoded.
If fully understood the inner message is always reconstructable.
Human minds have an innate ability to process outer messages (languages, symbols, sounds etc.) to extract inner meaning.</ns1:nodetext><ns1:children/></ns1:memenode><ns1:memenode><ns1:nodename>inner message</ns1:nodename><ns1:nodetext>The information payload of the message.
Any clues for decoding the message are useless here: e.g. saying "This message is in English" can only be read by those who understand English outer messages.

For a system to understand what it processes, there will need to be a set of core messages whose meaning is hard-wired into the system.</ns1:nodetext></ns1:memenode></ns1:memeContent><ns1:access>false</ns1:access><ns1:category>computing</ns1:category><ns1:repository>1</ns1:repository><ns1:creationDate>2002-07-19T21:49:10.607+01:00</ns1:creationDate><ns1:lastModified>2002-08-27T00:13:26.554+01:00</ns1:lastModified><ns1:relatedMemes/><ns1:relatedLinks><ns1:link><ns1:label>Ideas in GEB book</ns1:label><ns1:location>http://walpurg.iwarp.com/GEB.html</ns1:location></ns1:link></ns1:relatedLinks></ns1:meme>
